Sometimes we get emails that have some kind of criminal intent, this page exists to inform Precise Internet Consulting clients about the threats involved in these types of spam. Advance Fee Fraud: First and foremost is the extremely nasty "Nigerian 419 scam". The 419 comes from the criminal code number in Nigeria that deals with investigation and prosecution of this type of scam. We very strongly urge all our clients to read this page with more detailed information about this, people have died as a result of this type of scam. Child pornography: Next is a very disgusting subject, child pornography. Note that child pornography is illegal in all countries where Precise Internet Consulting has clients and incidences of advertising for child pornography access should be reported to your local police service immediately. Fraud (General): The third issue is plain fraud, this one is not that easy to define, as we are not legal experts. If you receive an email that you believe may be asking you to participate in a fraudulent activity (or that you believe may be an attempt to defraud you), please seek legal advice. It should be noted that some common Internet email related financial crimes are investigated by United States Federal Government agencies, the two main agencies that investigate fraud related emails and other financial irregularities are the Federal Trade Commision (FTC) and the Securities and Exchange Commision (SEC). The FTC run an reporting email address for most kinds of spam linked to USA companies or individuals at uce[AT]ftc.gov. The SEC are mainly concerned about scams related to stocks (those pump-and-dump things that "advise" people to buy stocks in companies), these can be reported to enforcement[AT]sec.gov. (In both cases replace [AT] with the @ sign) Others: Are there any common ones we have missed? Are those spams offering participation in foreign lottos some form of criminal spam that should be reported here? If you have some information that could be of value to people reading this page please get in contact. The postmaster address of this domain (preciseic.net) will get to us. |
